| Description | Records of the Children as Storytellers Project which saw the Globe support primary school teachers to incorporate drama techniques into their classroom practice. Teachers took part in professional development led by Globe Education Practitioners, who then worked alongside teachers in their classrooms, using dramatic storytelling techniques to teach two Shakespeare plays. Suggested yeargroups were as follows:
Year 1: The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Henry V, Year 2: The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Year 3: Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Year 4: Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Involvement was intended to develop pupils’ core speaking, listening, communication, language, drama and expressive arts skills through active participation, play and performance, as well as developing confidence and self-esteem and emotional intelligence and self-management.
In the first half of the ten week course, Globe Education Practitioners used role play-based workshops to inspire learners to start using the language of the play, exploring the characters’ motivations, and thinking about the structure of the story. The second half of the course, led by school teachers, built on the use of performance and oral storytelling to develop learners’ reading and writing skills, with support from the Globe team. Sometimes the project also included sessions for family members, engaging them in telling stories, asking questions, and developing their child’s critical thinking.
Resources and story sacks were also provided. |
