Research Bulletins

The Research Bulletins document the research findings of the experiment to perform Shakespeare in the reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, 1997-2002. Digital versions of the text are available on the catalogue for each Bulletin. They include comments on rehearsals, character development, scene development, dramaturgical context, cuts or changes to the text, music, movement, blocking on stage, vocal techniques, the pillars, audience, original practice and interviews with cast and crew. They also include reflections on how the space of the theatre should be used and the principles for performing in the space.

Adopt an Actor

Adopt and Actor started in 1998 as an interactive school project that aimed to link up school children with actors. This enabled them to follow actors through the process of a production, from rehearsals to the stage, and at the end of the run, in reflecting on the performance. By 2009 they had become interviews with actors for a general audience and offer a wealth of insights on each actor’s journey at the Globe. Digital sound files and transcripts of many of the interviews are available on the catalogue.

Videos of Plays

We have captured nearly all our productions, since the Prologue Season in 1996, in both the Globe Theatre and the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. We don’t edit our recordings and we sometimes use multiple static cameras, each placed at different angles to the stage. The intention is to create a view from the audience. Several performances of each play are recorded to reflect the development of each production. Archive recordings are solely for research purposes, and can only be consulted in our Reading Room.

Oral History: The Globe Memories Project

This oral history project, which is on-going, records key participants in the process of reconstruction Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. This was Sam Wanamaker’s vision and this oral history project seeks to record how that was realised. It follows the story up to the Royal opening in the Festival of Firsts, June 1997. Transcripts, where available, are attached to the catalogue and the interviews can be listened to in the Reading Room.
