| Description | Songwriter Steve Knightley (one half of leading folk band, Show of Hands) and historian Michael Wood celebrate one of England’s great musical traditions: songs of social protest.
In the year of the Peterloo anniversary, Steve and Michael will explore songs that have been the soundtrack to the People’s History; songs that shine a light on the lives of ordinary men and women who fought through times of struggle and suffering for the rights that are ours today.
From the Great Famine and the Peasants Revolt in the 14th century; the English Civil War; the Diggers and the Levellers; Peterloo; the Chartists; and World War One, right up to the present day. The evening will also touch on the huge influence this tradition has had on world music, especially American folk and blues – from the Delta blues and Muddy Waters to Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. |
